4 41 STANDARDS AND CERTI FICATIONS HEAT AND FLAME EN 407 : 2020 Glove Protective Against Thermal Risks This standard specifies requirements, test methods, information to be provided and marking of protective gloves against heat and/or fire. The nature and level of protection is indicated by a pictogram followed by a series of six digits specifying the level of performance for the relevant risk conditions described in the table below: DESCR I P TI ON LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 4 a) Fire performance Flame persistence (seconds) ≤20 ≤20 ≤3 ≤2 Incandescence (seconds) ≤120 ≤25 ≤5 b) Contact heat Contact temperature (°C) 100 250 350 500 Threshold time (seconds) ≤15 <15 <15 ≤15 c) Convective heat (HTI index) <4 ≤7 ≤10 ≤18 d) Radiant heat Heat transmission f (seconds) ≤5 ≤30 ≤90 ≤150 e) Small splashes of molten metal (droplets) ≤5 ≤15 ≤25 ≤35 f) Large projections of molten metal (grams of molten iron) 30 60 120 200 The EN 407:2004 standard was updated in April 2020. If a glove is tested only for contact heat an alternative symbol is used to indicate protection against heat without flame. EN 12477 specifies requirements and test methods for protective gloves for use in manual metal welding, cutting and related processes. It provides minimum requirements (EN ISO 21420, EN388, EN407) and classifies welder gloves in:. - Type A: more closely associated with torch gas welding and have higher performance requirements but less dexterity. - Type B: recommended for welding tasks requiring more dexterity such as TIG. They have lower protective performance. COLD EN 51 1 : 2006 This standard specifies requirements and test methods for gloves that protect against cold transmitted by convection down to -50°C. Protection against cold is represented by a pictogram followed by a series of three performance indicators, relating to the specific protective properties described in the following table: DESCR I P TI ON LEVEL 0 LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 4 A Convective cold Thermal insulation ITR in m2 C/w ITR<0,10 0,10<ITR<0,15 0,15<ITR<0,22 0,22<ITR<0,30 0,30<ITR B Contact cold Thermal resistance R in m2 C/w R<0,25 0,025<R<0,050 0,050<R<0,100 0,100<R<0,150 0,150<R C Water impermeability NULL PASSED - - - ABC abcdef abcdef
