4 4 3 STANDARDS AND CERTI FICATIONS Company first aid kits and boxes are mandatory items to be kept at your workplace in order to comply with occupational safety regulations. With regard to the content of the first aid kit, the decree provides for a standard basic equipment. Article 45 of Legislative Decree 81/08 specifies the contents of the first aid kit and the requirements for carrying out first aid training courses. Article 45 of Legislative Decree 81/08, referring to Decree 388 dated 2003, divides companies into different groups (A and B) based on the type of business, the number of people employed and the risk factors that may affect workers. The decree classifies companies into three groups according to the type of business conducted, the number of employees and the risk factors as follows: - Group A : all companies or production units with industrial activities, thermoelectric power stations, nuclear plants and laboratories, mining companies and other mining activities, companies manufacturing explosives, powders and ammunition; companies or production units with five workers belonging to or attributable to INAIL tariff groups with an accident index of permanent disability greater than four; companies or production units with more than five permanent workers in the agricultural sector. - Group B : companies or production units with three or more workers not included in Group A. - Group C : companies or production units with less than three workers not included in Group A. The employer is required to ensure that the following are present at the workplace: - first aid kit for companies belonging to group A and B in compliance with annex 1 of Ministerial Decree. 388 - first aid kit for companies belonging to group C in compliance with annex 2 of Ministerial Decree. 388 MINIMUM CONTENTS OF THE FIRST AID KIT : Ministerial Decree 388 stipulates that companies in Groups A and B must have a first aid kit containing the minimum equipment specified in Annex 1: - Sterile disposable gloves (5 pairs). - Splash-proof face shield. - 1 litre bottle of iodopovidone 10% iodine skin solution (1). - 500 ml bottles of physiological solution (sodium chloride - 0.9%) (3). - Sterile gauze pads 10 x 10 in single pouches (10). - Sterile gauze pads 18 x 40 in single pouches (2). - Sterile disposable towels (2). - Sterile disposable dressing forceps (2). - Pack of medium-sized elastic netting (1). - Pack of cotton wool (1). - Ready-to-use plaster packs of different sizes (2). - Rolls of plaster 2.5 cm high (2). - One pair of scissors. - Haemostatic laces (3). - Ready-to-use ice packs (2). - Disposable bags for medical waste collection (2). - Thermometer. - Blood pressure measuring device. In companies of Group C, the employer must ensure that a medication kit containing the minimum equipment indicated in Annex 2 is available: - Sterile disposable gloves (2 pairs). - 125 ml bottle of iodopovidone 10% iodine skin solution (1). - 250 ml bottles of physiological solution (sodium chloride - 0.9%) (1). - Sterile gauze pads 18 x 40 in single pouches (1). - Sterile gauze pads 10 x 10 in single pouches (3). - Sterile disposable dressing forceps (1). - Pack of cotton wool (1). - Ready-to-use plaster pack of different sizes (1). - Roll of plaster 2.5 cm high (1). - Roll of hemmed bandage 10 cm high (1). - One pair of scissors. (1). - One haemostatic lace (1). - Ready-to-use ice pack (1). - Disposable bags for medical waste collection (1). - Instructions on how to use the aforementioned equipment and how to administer first aid while waiting for the emergency service. N.B: The law requires that the contents must not be expired, or missing after they have been used. It is therefore necessary to replace or replenish them by using suitable kits. Solid items such as patches usually have an expiry date of 5 years. For liquid substances, however, the usable life is reduced to 2 or 3 years.
